I am an Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department at Stanford University. My research explores the relationship between democratic ideals and democratic practices. I teach courses in contemporary political theory and the ethics of democracy.

My book, Election Day: How We Vote and What It Means for Democracy articulates the distinctive purposes of popular voting in contemporary democracies and identifies principles for evaluating and reforming electoral systems and voting practices to better fulfill those purposes.
